Gnathology

The term gnathology comes from the fusion of the Latin terms "gnatos" (mandible) and "logos", study: gnathology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study of the masticatory system.

Chewing problems can cause Anatomo-functional pathologies, such as (to name a few):

  • bruxism (i.e. teeth grinding, especially at night)
  • mullet
  • Ear pain and closed ear
  • mandibol blocks
  • joint noises
  • chewing difficulties
  • cranio-cervico-mandibular disorders
  • backache

In these cases, it is advisable to visit a gnathologist that through a thorough examination Is able to accurately identify the origin of the pathologia (if this is due to a masticatory problem) and set up the most appropriate therapy together with a dentist.

One of the most common solutions involves theuse of the gnathological splint, a customized resin mobile device patient to patient (i.e., designed on their dental impressions), capable of make the jaw move freely, encourage relaxation of the muscles involved and re-establish correct posture.
