Why shouldn't we rinse toothpaste when we brush our teeth?

25 Nov 2022 | Curiosities

We brush our teeth for 3 minutes, spit out the toothpaste and then rinse with water: right?

Although this is what most people do, in reality it would be better not to rinse our mouth with water when we finish brushing our teeth!

Why?

The active ingredient in most toothpastes is the fluorine whose task is Preventing tooth decay by remineralizing enamel and making teeth more resistant to acid attacks.

The Rinsing the mouth after oral hygiene can remove fluoride deposited on teeth, so ideally the toothpaste should be spit out but not rinsed with water to allow the fluoride to remain in the mouth and continue its preventive action.

Similarly, Using mouthwash (even if it contains fluoride) immediately after brushing teeth could be counterproductive because, again, rinses can wash away the concentrated fluoride left on the teeth by the toothpaste.

If we have always rinsed our mouths with water after brushing our teeth, it can be difficult to stop doing it: it is a good idea to Use a toothpaste that makes little foam so that you feel less need to clean your mouth with water!
